Overview

The Tu-160 ‘White Swan’ (NATO: Blackjack) is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft ever built, the fastest bomber in service, and the largest variable-sweep wing aircraft ever flown. At Mach 2.05 and 275 tonnes maximum takeoff weight, it dwarfs every other bomber in existence.

Design & Development

The Tu-160’s four NK-32 afterburning turbofans are the most powerful engines ever fitted to a combat aircraft. Its variable-sweep wings extend from 20° to 65°, spanning 55.7 meters fully forward. Two internal weapons bays can carry 40,000 kg of ordnance including Kh-101 cruise missiles. The aircraft’s smooth white anti-flash paint gives it its ‘White Swan’ nickname.

Operational History

Originally deployed in 1987, the Tu-160 remains Russia’s primary nuclear deterrent bomber. Production restarted in 2015 with the modernized Tu-160M variant. Russia operates approximately 16 Tu-160s, conducting regular long-range patrol missions and cruise missile strikes.

Armament

  • 2 internal rotary launchers:
    • 12× Kh-101/102 cruise missiles (5,500 km range)
    • 12× Kh-55SM nuclear cruise missiles
    • 24× Kh-15 (AS-16 Kickback) short-range
  • Total weapons load: 40,000 kg

No defensive guns — relies on speed, altitude, and standoff weapons launched far from enemy defenses.
