Overview
The HAL Tejas is India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), making India one of the few nations to design and build its own supersonic fighter. After a decades-long development journey, the Tejas Mk1A has matured into a capable and cost-effective platform.
Design & Development
The Tejas uses a tailless compound delta wing with digital fly-by-wire controls, composite airframe (45% by weight—one of the highest ratios of any fighter), and a glass cockpit. The Mk1A adds an Israeli AESA radar, midair refueling probe, and improved electronic warfare suite.
Operational History
The Indian Air Force has ordered 123 Tejas Mk1A fighters. The aircraft entered squadron service in 2016 and has been declared combat-ready. A naval variant for carrier operations and the more powerful Tejas Mk2 are under development.
