Overview
The B-58 Hustler was the first operational supersonic bomber, capable of delivering nuclear weapons at Mach 2. Its sleek delta-wing design and four podded engines made it one of the most beautiful—and dangerous—aircraft of the Cold War era.
Design & Development
The Hustler’s area-ruled fuselage and conical-camber delta wing were optimized for Mach 2 flight. Rather than an internal bomb bay, it carried weapons and extra fuel in a large external pod mounted under the fuselage. The crew of three (pilot, navigator-bombardier, and defense systems operator) sat in individual tandem cockpits, each with its own ejection capsule rated for Mach 2 bailout.
Operational History
The B-58 served from 1960 to 1970, setting 19 world speed records during its career. It won the Bleriot, Thompson, Mackay, and Bendix trophies. However, it was extremely expensive to operate and had a high accident rate (26 of 116 aircraft lost), leading to its relatively early retirement.
Armament
- 1× B61/B43 nuclear bomb (in external pod)
- T171 20mm tail gun (defensive)
- AN/ALQ-16 ECM pod
Unique design: weapons and extra fuel carried in a large droppable pod under the fuselage rather than internal bays.
